Why surface prep decides the result

Wipe the rocket with a lint-free cloth and a mild soap solution, then let it dry completely before touching the surface again.
If your finish is flat or satin, apply a gloss clear coat first. The smoother base gives the decal film a continuous surface to cling to and makes edge sealing more reliable.
Water-slide technique that avoids tears
Soak each decal in room-temperature water just until it releases from the backing paper, not longer. Over-soaking softens the film and makes it stretch or tear during positioning. Use a shallow dish and slide the decal off the paper directly onto the model rather than lifting it with your fingers.

Sealing and care trade-offs
A clear topcoat over the decals protects the edges from handling and moisture, but it adds a thin layer that can slightly soften fine print if applied too heavily. Use light mist coats rather than a wet coat. If you prefer a bare decal look, at least seal the edges with a small brush of clear coat to prevent lifting.
Avoid solvent-based clear coats directly over water-slide decals unless the product label confirms compatibility. A test on a scrap decal or hidden area is the only reliable check.
Step-by-step decal application
- Clean and gloss the surface: Wipe the rocket with a mild soap solution and lint-free cloth, then dry fully. If the paint is flat or satin, apply a gloss clear coat and let it cure before decaling. Check for dust in raking light before moving on.
- Cut and soak one decal: Cut out the needed marking from the AeroTech 18016 decal sheet, leaving a small margin. Soak in room-temperature water until the decal slides freely on its backing. Do not soak multiple decals at once; they soften faster than you can place them.
- Position with slide-off method: Slide the decal off the backing directly onto the model. Use a soft brush or your finger to nudge it into alignment while it is still wet. Keep the decal wet enough to move; a dry edge grabs and tears.
- Blot and smooth: Gently blot excess water with a lint-free cloth, working from the center outward to push out air bubbles. Do not rub the decal surface. Small bubbles often disappear as the decal dries; large ones need a tiny pinprick before sealing.
- Seal the edges: After the decal is fully dry, apply a light mist coat of clear coat over the model, or brush a thin line of clear coat along each decal edge. Test your clear coat on a scrap decal first to avoid wrinkling.
- Cure and inspect: Let the sealed model cure according to the clear coat instructions before handling or flying. Inspect edges for lifting and touch up if needed. A fully cured seal prevents peeling during transport and launch prep.
